CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Nearly 1,000 school bus drivers for Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools  hit the streets before dawn Monday to practice their new routes.

Think of it as a dress rehearsal just before the big productions opens.

Around 950 school buses left local depots starting at 5am, and headed out on the street to fine tune their routes.

The annual routine has become the early signs for students to hit the books again after a long summers vacation.

Bus drivers will get an entire week to came in, get behind the wheel, and hit the road in preparation for the big day.

Drivers were seen walking around checking lights and making sure their buses were in good working order, as one by one, they filed out of the parking lot and started rolling down city streets.

CMS said they have some suggestions for parents to make the first day of school as easy as possible.

Officials say parents should walk their children to the bus stops a couple of times to make sure everyone is comfortable with where it is, and how long it takes to get there.

They also caution kids should be at the stop no less than 10 minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive.

Parents should talk to their children about safety around the busses as well. Make sure the only approach the bus from the front, and only when the red caution lights are on.

The Charlotte School System also cautions drivers to be wary of the school buses out on the roads.

The first day of school is slated for Monday, August 27th.
