Thousands of Charlotte-area Muslims mark the end of Ramadan

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Thousands of Charlotte area Muslims marked the end of the holy month, Ramadan on Sunday.

Many gathered at The Park Expo on East Independence Boulevard for prayer and a short sermon in East Charlotte.

One of the pillars of the Islamic faith is fasting during the month of Ramadan. Muslims have been fasting from sun rise to sun set for the past 30 days.

Sunday's celebration is called Eid al-Fitr.

Eid al-Fitr began in the evening of Saturday, August 18, 2012 and ends in the evening of Sunday, August 19, 2012.
