A college freshman from Charlotte became sick during a school event and died early Saturday morning from the illness.

According to school officials at North Carolina A&T State University, 21-year-old Jawuan Paul Trotter became ill while attending a student event in the Memorial Student Union.

Officials say campus police and emergency services were immediately called to attend to Trotter. He was rushed to Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital where he later died.

It isn't clear exactly what caused him to get sick.

Trotter, from Charlotte, was a freshman undeclared major.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the Trotter family" said Chancellor Harold L. Martin Sr., "The Aggie family is deeply saddened by this tragic loss."

The university's counseling services office is prepared to provide counseling for students and employees over the weekend.

The office will resume normal operating hours on Monday.
