Gordon becomes a hurricane, Helene still churning in the Gulf

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - As expected for the month of August, the tropics have come alive.  The National Hurricane Center is now tracking two tropical systems in the Atlantic.

The first active storm to form, Gordon, has now strengthened into a hurricane, despite its relatively high latitude.  Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect for the Azores, but no other land is expected to be affected.  Gordon is not expected to intensify any further.

Tropical Storm Helene is barely hanging on to its Tropical Storm status.  Wind speeds with this storm are just above minimum criteria for a Tropical Storm.  Helene will make landfall along the Gulf coast of Mexico today.

Neither storm is expected to directly impact the Carolinas, but Helene's remnants could send a substantial amount of moisture in our direction, indirectly increasing shower and thunderstorm chances later in the week.
