SHELBY, NC (WBTV) - Friday marks the kickoff of a 5 day event that brings thousands of baseball players, fans and families to Cleveland County.
The series is played at Shelby High School and for the next week, officials are expecting the games will also bring in millions of dollars to the Cleveland County economy.
"It's good for tax payers because if they county is making money from sales tax and occupancy tax, then their income tax is lowered," said Jackie Sibley with the Cleveland County Chamber of Commerce.
Sibley says the series could bring up to 18 million dollars in money spent at area hotels, shops and restaurants.
We found local businesses who look forward to the week every year when their cash registers ring non-stop. George Rizkallah owns The Shelby Cafe in Uptown. He says his sales more than double while the series is in town.
