CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A driver is trapped for over ten minutes after a violent collision early Thursday morning.
The debris field was over fifty yards wide after a near head-on car crash shut down the intersection of East Independence Boulevard and Sardis Road around 1am.
Charlotte Fire arrived, and immediately started working to free the driver of a silver sedan, who was pinned inside his car.
Two other people in an SUV were busy being transported to Carolinas Medical Center by Medics.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said the sedan was heading outbound on East Independence at a very high rate of speed with his headlights off.
The car blew through a stop light, and collided with the SUV.
The ensuing collision sent both cars spinning wildly out of control.
The CMPD said the two people in the SUV were a father and daughter. They were hurt, but should be okay.
The driver of the silver car at the heart of all of this has much more serious injuries, but also should be able to recover.
The investigation is still in it's early stages, but police say alcohol may have played a role in the crash.
