Union leaders are hosting a "shadow convention" this weekend to highlight key issues for middle-class workers.
The idea for the rally was born after the Democratic Party decided to hold its national convention in Charlotte, N.C. The state has long been viewed as hostile to organized labor.
In North Carolina, teachers and public workers are banned from collective bargaining. And it's a "right-to-work" state, which means workers cannot be required to join a union as a condition of employment.
Thousands of workers are expected in Philadelphia for Saturday's rally. The centerpiece of the event is a "Second Bill of Rights" laying out workers' rights.
While some large unions are withholding money from the convention event, officials say that doesn't mean they aren't throwing their full support behind President Barack Obama's re-election campaign.
