Investigators determine cause in overnight fire

Fire investigators now say improperly discarded smoking materials caused a fire that put two people out of their home in northeast Charlotte.

Neighbors alerted the sleeping homeowners as the back of their home went up in flames early Friday morning.

Heavy smoke and flames billowed from the home on Ridgedale Court as investigators pulled onto the scene at about 12:30 a.m. They found one of the homeowners trying to put the fire out with a garden hose.

Investigators said the fire was contained to the back of the house, but there's no word yet how much damage it caused.

The Red Cross was called in to help the couple find another place to live until repairs to the home can be made.
