Driver pinned in car after overnight accident

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Firefighters work to rescue a man who was trapped in his car after a violent overnight accident.

Neighbors said they didn't see the wreck, but they certainly heard it.

Around 1:30am Thursday morning, people who live along the 6900 block of Alexander Road just off of Providence Road heard what they described as a loud explosion.

Many rushed outside to find what was left of a car, now laying in a front yard of a house about fifty feet off the roadway.

Numerous trees were sheared down, and a gaping wound could be seen on a nearby pine tree where the collision happened.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said the male driver was trapped in his car until firefighters could get him out.

He was rushed to the emergency room, where his condition remains unknown.

It's not clear at this point what may have caused the accident.

Wrecker crews had to collect pieces of the car from the scene which were scattered in about a forty yard radius.
