Man killed when struck by freight train

A freight train hit and killed a man walking in the tracks Tuesday afternoon in north Charlotte.

The incident was reported at 2 p.m. on the 2400 block of N. Tryon Street near the Norfolk Southern rail yard, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Ronald Gray Tredwell, 54, was identified by police as the pedestrian who was killed.

Train operators told police a man was walking southbound in the path of the train.

The engineer sounded the horn and activated the train's emergency brake but the train was unable to stop in time, police said.

The man, who has not been identified, died at the scene.

The train was coming out of Norfolk Southern's Linwood yard en route to Macon, Georgia.

The train had three locomotives and 85 freight cars weighing 4,456 tons.

As a result of the accident investigation, Amtrak train #75, the southbound Piedmont service, is arrived into Charlotte 16 minutes late, Amtrak officials said.
