CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -
The reward for information leading to the arrest of a killer in the Belmont neighborhood of Charlotte has been upped to $10,000.
The Treadstone Group, of Denver, NC, is offering a $5,000 reward in addition to the $5,000 reward offered from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Crime Stoppers.
Matthew Hawkins, 39, died at Carolina's Medical Center when someone shot him over $20.
Hawkins was shot in the head near the Little Sugar Creek Greenway on July 10th. The incident was reported on the 700 block of East 17th Street off of North McDowell Street, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
"I'd love to find this dirt bag personally," said Ross Bulla, with The Treadstone Group. Bulla said donating the money, will hopefully find the killer.
Hawkins had bought the home to remodel it and was inside doing construction with his girlfriend when the shooter came inside and demanded money, police say.
"(It's) a father and mother's worst nightmare of all the ways to lose a child. It was just a nightmare. It still is," said his father, Bud Hawkins
Hawkins was shot in the head near the eye and was taken to Carolinas Medical Center for surgery, according to police. Darcy Jameson lives just down the block from the crime scene.
"I was sitting in my living room. I heard one single gunshot. Thought it was firecrackers and the heard everybody running down to the street, and that somebody got shot," she said.
Police canvassed the area looking for the shooter, but have not been able to locate him. Authorities are not releasing a suspect description.
"My wife and I and our whole family just want him off the street, so he can't hurt anyone else. That's all we want," Bud Hawkins said.
Police are still looking for the shooter. If you have any information, you are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. You can remain anonymous, and can earn $10,000.
