CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Police in Charlotte said the man wanted for the death of Alfred Michael Smith was arrested Wednesday morning in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Joseph Lloyd Rayfield, 42, was arrested by the Myrtle Beach Police Department without incident, police said.

Homicide Detectives from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department are currently en-route to Myrtle Beach to interview Mr. Rayfield.

The extradition process will begin immediately, but there is no current timetable on Rayfield's return to Mecklenburg County.

According to homicide, the body of Alfred Michael Smith, 52, was found inside his home on the 11300 block of Red Hickory Lane on July 24.

Police were called to the home at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, after neighbors told them they had not seen the man who lived there. Police said a neighbor went inside the home and found a man dead.

"At first I wasn't sure if it was unsafe to go outside, because we had a suspect on the loose, but now that they got him (Rayfield) it's a lot safer now," said one neighbor.

Neighbors told WBTV that Smith was found in the bathtub.

"The man of the house that had the key, busted into the door, and he saw legs coming out of  the bathtub, shut the door when to his home next door, called the police," said Janine Stack.

On Monday, detectives signed a murder warrant on Joseph Lloyd Rayfield, 42.

According to search warrants, police say Smith was a detox patient who recently let another detox patient, later identified as Rayfield, live with him.

The Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) has been attempting to locate Rayfield, who they believe may have fled to the Myrtle Beach, South Carolina area.

Rayfield was believed to be operating the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee that belonged to Smith, but the vehicle has not been recovered. The North Carolina license plate number is RXR-1112.  The vehicle is champagne in color, with a decal of a marlin on the back windshield and a front decorative tag displaying a beach scene.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 704-432-TIPS and speak directly to a Homicide Unit Detective.

Detective Tisdale is the lead detective assigned to the case. In addition, you may also call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.

Rayfield was arrested three separate times by police in Charlotte in 2011 on charges of larceny and probation violation.
