CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -
Seeing this construction equipment at Ardrey Kell Road and Travis Gulch Drive we knew this was a good sign.
Work is taking place right in front the Southhampton subdivision which is down the street from Ardrey Kell High School.
Last year you told See, Click, Fix there was no place for students walking to the school to cross Ardrey Kell safely. We even heard from drivers who said they've seen some close calls during the morning rush hour. Charlotte DOT says it too heard from the public, and the work to make things better has officially started.
Crews are extending the sidewalk from the subdivision entrance to a crosswalk that will have a pedestrian beacon system.
It will have the traditional indicators for pedestrians to know when to walk and stop, such as the solid hand signal, or flashing hand with the countdown.
For drivers it will have additional lights overhead. The flashing yellow and red lights will alert drivers to prepare to stop and let students cross.
Once complete the crosswalk will be a welcome addition to the landscape to improve pedestrian safety, while minimizing traffic disruption.
The entire project will cost around $220,000. Charlotte DOT is working to have everything finished by the time school starts next month, weather permitting.
