CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Just one day after a Carolina Panther made a promise for a Super Bowl win, his teammate is making a promise of a different kind.

Wide Receiver Steve Smith has pledged to donate $100,000 to survivors of the tragic movie theatre shooting in Aurora, CO.

The news comes nearly a week after police say James Eagan Holmes opened fired on a crowded movie theater during the midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises, killing 12 people.

Fifty-eight others were injured in the shooting last Friday morning, with injuries ranging from minor to critical injuries.  Some of the victims are still hospitalized and looking at a lengthy recovery process.

"As a father and husband I cannot imagine the pain and suffering the victims are going through,"  Steve Smith said according to the Panthers' Facebook and Twitter accounts on Thursday.

"My family's hearts & prayers are extended to theirs, and I hope this contribution might assist in paying some of the medical bills that will help allow these families to move forward in this tragic circumstance."

Smith, who has been with the Panthers since 2001, ended his note with hope and blessings.

"Hopefully this helps a little bit. From one NFL city to another, God bless."
