Pet dog shot while police search for wanted man

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

A pet dog was shot Wednesday night at the Lanier Apartments after police entered a home while looking for a wanted man.

The shooting happened shortly before 10 p.m. on Carmine Street in West Charlotte.

Police told WBTV News that officers were searching the area while looking for a man who ran from them.

Police said the man had warrants, but would not confirm what the warrants were for or the man's identity.

The officer went inside an open backdoor of one of the apartments to search for the suspect that is when the dog, police identified as a Rottweiler, confronted the officer and the officer shot the animal.

The dog was taken by animal control to be treated for its injury. Police have not said if they found the person they were looking for.
