Deputies: Man with axe tries to rob restaurant, scared off by owner with gun

LANCASTER, SC (WBTV) -

A Lancaster man is facing charges after deputies say he tried to rob a restaurant with an axe while intoxicated on drugs.

The incident was reported Wednesday at 5:34 a.m. at Rusty's Grill on the 2400 block of Pineview Drive, according to a news release from the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office.

According to deputies, David Leroy Deese, 45, of Lancaster, walked into the restaurant wielding an axe and demanding money.

"The business owner produced a handgun and challenged Deese," deputies told WBTV.

Deputies say Deese began apologizing, advised that he was "on drugs," and fled the scene.

A deputy on patrol spotted him a short time later just a few streets away and took him into custody.

Deese is charged with armed robbery and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

He's being held at the Lancaster County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.

"First and foremost I am thankful that no one was injured during this incident.  The business owner showed great restraint as he rightfully defended himself and his business," Lancaster Sheriff Barry Faile said.

"I also applaud the men and women of the Sheriff's Office for their swift and diligent response to the incident.  We are thankful that we could get this dangerous suspect off the street so quickly."
