CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Investigators in North Charlotte say lightning may have started a house fire Friday evening.

A woman and two children escaped unharmed... but two dogs were killed.

The home on Tupelo Lane in Highland Creek was heavily damaged. Neighbors say the dogs got out okay but then ran back inside the burning house.

One of those neighbors saw flames shooting out of the windows:

"They're going to go through the phases of anything like a death or divorce or that type of thing, this is not...right now thy don't fully grasp what's happened.  I'm sure mom does, and I think the young people , it's really going to hit them when they go back in and the things they loved and cared about are gone.  They're not going to be able to live in this house."

A heavy storm was moving through this area when the fire started.
