Legendary Mooresville Coach Popp dies

Mooresville, NC (WBTV) -High School Football in Mooresville this year won't quite be the same. Legendary Coach Joe Popp passed away Thursday morning in his sleep at the age of 82.

Back in 2010, Popp was honored when the stadium was dedicated in his name. He became the coach of the Blue Devils in the 50's leading them to their only state title in 1961. He went on to coach college football at Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, North Carolina and George Washington--then coached pro football five years as an assistant for the Cleveland Browns. He went back to coach Mooresville in the early 70's before retiring.
