Driver ticketed in wreck that injured 7, shut down interstate

The driver of a truck has been ticketed after seven people were hurt in a crash that shut down the southbound lanes of Interstate 85 on Wednesday morning.

The incident was reported around 8:30 a.m. at the exit for Statesville Avenue.

The North Carolina Highway patrol told WBTV that the accident happened when a driver attempted to take the exit off of the interstate, but swerved back into traffic and cut off the tractor trailer.

This created a pile up, and involved two other cars and another tractor trailer, the troopers told WBTV.

Driver Lee Victor Sommersell stopped to help.

"I grabbed the fire extinguisher and tried to see if they needed the flames put out," said Sommersell.

The crash is in the same location where a tractor trailer burst into flames on Friday, killing one person after the truck driver smashed into another vehicle. Three vehicles were involved total.

North Carolina Highway Patrol tells WBTV that the location is considered a coincidence at this time.

"I believe it's just a coincidence, we have a lot of wrecks in this area, it's unfortunate that we had two serious ones here together," said Trooper Glen Tupper.

The tractor trailer driver, Nestor Estero was ticketed after the crash for failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision.

A spokesperson with the NC Department of Transportation says crews will inspect the crash site to see if any sign changes need to be made.

All lanes were reopened to traffic by 11:30 am.
