ROCK HILL, SC (WBTV) -

Deputies say two men were arrested after getting into a fight that led to a woman being hit in the head with a pick axe.

Jimmy Lee Beam, 45, of Rock Hill, and Justin Alexander Wright, 17, of Rock Hill, were arrested and charged with assault and battery third degree, according to the report from the York County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies responded to a home on the 1600 block of Twin Lakes Road in reference to an assault call.

Investigators found a 37-year-old woman lying in the roadway in a pool of blood with several people around her to keep her from trying to get up, according to the report.

Deputies determined that Beam and Wright had gotten into a fight with a pick axe and a shovel.

During a phone conversation on Wednesday, Jimmy Beam told WBTV that an altercation began when his 17-year-old nephew hit him several times with a shovel.

Beam says he reached for a tool, a maddock used to dig up tree roots, and tried to defend himself.

He said in reaching behind him to pick up the tool, he accidentally hit a woman who was on scene.

Deputies say Beam ignored commands by law enforcement and had to be tased in order to be handcuffed and taken into custody.

Both men were transported to the York County Detention Center. The woman was taken to the hospital for treatment and was later released.

Beam told WBTV he plans to speak with investigators to get the charges dropped on Wednesday.
