"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.
The teenage daughter of one of our Editorial Board members made an interesting observation recently.
She pointed out a facebook post to her father on a friend's page.
It read something like this:
Be a parent and not a friend to your child.
After all, your child will have many friends, but they have only two parents.
As we continue our editorial series on the importance of parenting, our board gravitated toward this concept.
Your role as the parent of a child is the most important relationship you and your child will ever experience.
Are you leading by example?
Are you establishing proper boundaries?
Are you giving them the tools to handle themselves independently?
Have you established a firm sense of right and wrong?
Do they respect themselves and others?
Are they accountable for their actions?
Their friends will not be the ones answering those questions.
This job falls squarely on the shoulders of parents and yes – it is a difficult and demanding task.
Show your kids you love, care for and support them, but remember – they have many friends, but only two parents.
Nobody else can have the type of impact on their lives that you can.
Because WBTV is "On Your Side," we encourage everyone to "Speak Out" – tell us what YOU think. SpeakOut@wbtv.com.
