CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -
Former State Senator Robert Pittenger won Tuesday's runoff for U.S. House District 9, defeating former Mecklenburg County Sheriff, Jim Pendergraph.
Pendergraph gave his concession speech shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday, citing a deficit of around 1700 votes as too much to overcome.
Unofficial election results had Pittenger winning Iredell County, but Pendergraph was slightly ahead in Mecklenburg County.
Pendergraph admitted that he did not have the votes to win Union County, prompting his concession.
Pittenger addressed a crowd of several hundred after Pendergraph's concession.
"We're going to be going to every part of the district and bring our message out for freedom and constitutional government. I love these people. We've got a great region to represent," Pittenger said.
Pittenger will face Democrat Jennifer Roberts in November. Both are vying for Representative Sue Myrick's seat, which she has held for 18 years.
