CLEVELAND COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -
A man is behind bars in Shelby after police say he shot and killed his stepfather and then stabbed his own mother several times.
Police arrested Matthew Safrit, 21 and charged him with murder Friday afternoon. He faces several other charges as well.
Officers said Nathan Cloninger and his wife, Jennifer, Safrit's mother, went to his home for a pretty simple reason.
"Basically resulted from a vehicle belonging to a mother and a stepfather and the mother and stepfather wanted to retrieve the vehicle," said police.
Shortly after the couple arrived, police say Safrit shot his stepfather several times and then attacked his mother.
Police say Safrit tried to escape but a K-9 tracked him to the woods where officers say he was hiding.
He is also charged with assaulting a K-9 officer.
Safrit's mother was treated and released.
He is in jail under no bond and charged with a laundry list of offenses including murder, assault with the a deadly weapon and possession of firearm by a felon.
There is no word on when Safrit will have his first court appearance.
