CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Police say the man shot in the head near Uptown Charlotte over $20 has died. Matthew Hawkins, 39,  died around 9:45 p.m. Thursday at Carolina's Medical Center.

Hawkins was shot in the head near the Little Sugar Creek Greenway Tuesday afternoon. The incident was reported on the 700 block of East 17th Street off of North McDowell Street, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Hawkins had bought the home to remodel it and was inside doing construction with his girlfriend when the shooter came inside and demanded money, police say.

"I'm very angry," said Hawkins neighbor and friend, Karen Cira.

Hawkins was shot in the head near the eye and was taken to Carolinas Medical Center for surgery, according to police.

Darcy Jameson lives just down the block.

"I was sitting in my living room. I heard one single gunshot. Thought it was firecrackers and the heard everybody running down to the street, and that somebody got shot," she said.

Police canvassed the area looking for the shooter Tuesday, but have not been able to locate him. Authorities are not releasing a suspect description.

"He is a family man," Cira said.

Hours after the shooting Jameson became a crime victim. Someone stole her outdoor furniture, and she now plans to take matters in to her own hands.

" I am going to Home Depot and buy a few more locks for my doors and probably a baseball bat."

Police are still looking for the shooter. If you have any information, you are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. You can remain anonymous.
