Charlotte - Mecklenburg school (CMS) district will be paying more to support new superintendent Dr. Heath Morrison's cabinet.
Morrison has created two new positions: Deputy Superintendent and Chief of Staff.
Ann Clark is the new Deputy Superintendent. She will be paid $190,000 a year
Earnest Winston is Morrison's new Chief of Staff. He will be paid $130,000 a year.
Morrison admits the district will have to pay more for these positions. He says the price tag will be minimal. He also adds he hopes the money won't dominate the discussion.
"I hope the conversation is going to be," Morrison said. "About what these individuals will do to improve the condition for children and help our schools."
Morrison also named a new Chief Operating Officer and Chief Accountability Officer.
The new Chief Operating Officer is Millard House, II. He comes from Tulsa, OK.
House told WBTV he chose to work for CMS because the district is a good one and he was looking for a challenge.
The new Chief Accountability Officer is Frank Barnes. He comes from Boston, MA.
He says he was approached to apply for the position. And says his position will impact students. His role will inform parents how well their children's school is doing.
He will analyze school's test scores.
Morrison said he wanted a diverse cabinet. He now has four African American males serving in his top executive staff. The new superintendent said his first priority is quality when hiring. He says he found quality African American men to fill some vacant spots.
"I am really proud of who we are bringing on board," the superintendent said. "I am proud because of what they have done. Their excellence, their qualities they bring. The fact that it's diversified - our cabinet - so it is more reflective of our student population, that's a bonus."
The school board unanimously agreed on Morrion's picks. They all signed a four year contract and will start sometime in early August.
