STATESVILLE, NC (WBTV) -

Police in Statesville say an unknown man tried to abduct a child Thursday afternoon.

The incident was reported on the 1300 block of Reid Street around 3 p.m., according to a news release from the Statesville Police Department.

A white male was driving a Dodge Magnum around the neighborhood and stopped beside a house, police said.

The vehicle left the area after being parked for approximately 5 minutes. At 5 p.m., the man returned driving the same Dodge Magnum.

Police say he tried to lure a child away from the house by promising candy to the child.  When the man saw a parent, he immediately left the scene traveling west on the 1300 block of Reid Street.

The child did not walk towards the Dodge Magnum and a parent was outside with the child, according to police.  The suspect is described as a white male with short brown or black hair.
