North Carolina's TV icon passes away

Hello again everyone, it's Paul Cameron in the WBTV newsroom.

Tonight at 5:00PM—he was North Carolina's father figure-- wise, just, honest, handsome, witty, musically talented, able to outsmart crooks and stay a step ahead of his bumbling deputy.  With homespun humor and stories that always imparted a lesson, Sheriff Andy put a little town called Mayberry on America's television map.  Tonight, Andy Griffith, the man who went from Mt. Airy to Matlock, is dead at age 86.  We'll look at the way he influenced generations of Americans.

We now know the names of the four victims onboard a C-130 Hercules tanker that crashed while fighting wildfires are dead.  Flags are lowered to half-staff across the state.  We're talking to the NC Air National Guard about what may have caused such a tragedy.

Ever wondered what a nearby lightning strike looks like?  We've got video of a bolt of electricity hitting next to the woman holding her cell phone camera.  It's quite a show.
