NEW ROADS, LA (WAFB) -
One man is dead after a domestic disturbance late Saturday night in New Roads.
Chief Kevin McDonald said around 11:30 p.m. his officers were called about a dispute in the 100 block of Cherry Street.
When police arrived they found Joseph Williams, Jr. of New Roads collapsed in the front yard.
Police said Williams went to the house to see his girlfriend and ended up arguing with her outside.
Police said the woman's mother, Sheila Cushionberry, also lived at the house and told the man to leave repeatedly.
"Every time she heard his voice get loud or whatever, she came outside because she know our past history with fighting and stuff," said Lesha Sept, the girlfriend of the deceased. "But it ain't never got this bad."
Investigators reported Williams told Cushionberry to "stay out of my business, stay out of my business" and then punched her twice in the face.
They added Cushionberry then grabbed a knife and stabbed Williams in the chest.
"He hit her with that gin bottle, she stabbed him. I thought it was his arm. I didn't know she had hit him to kill him. She didn't know either," said Sept. "I know she didn't mean to kill him."
According to detectives, Williams ran from the home but died in the front yard. Sept and Williams have a son together, who turns one later in July. Sept says since Saturday he's been asking for "Da-da".
"I told him Da-da gone."
Cushionberry was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.
McDonald said it will be up to the District Attorney and a grand jury to decide whether Cushionberry acted in self-defense.
Coming up Monday night on 9News at 5 and 6, hear from Cushionberry's daughter.
