CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Closing time is prime time for robbers at the Family Dollar store on Statesville Road.
For the third time in 15 months, robbers appear as the store is about the shut its doors for the night.
The most recent was last month. But we've done Crimestoppers Reports at the same place in September of 2010 and again in November of 2011.
All three robberies are different, but all three share the common thread-- closing time.
"It's always at the end of the night, a few minutes before they close," said CMPD Detective Marty Cuthbertson. "Sounds like the same person we deal with all the time on the Family Dollars."
On this night, a man wearing all black with a blue toboggan covering his face walked through the front doors and straight to the checkout counter.
He frightens a clerk who had just helped a customer with a purchase.
The gunman demanded money and summoned the manager to open the registers. But there was a problem.
"The manager didn't have a key to open the registers, so what she had to do, she had to ring up an item before the cash register would open."
The robber then filled his bag with cash and strolled out the front door. Employees locked up behind him for fear he might return.
"Scary to them and a lot of them are kind of afraid to come back to work, thinking something else might happen."
Police can't say for certainty if the toboggan robber is connected to any of the previous stick-ups. But they want him stopped before there's any escalation in violence. Call Crimestoppers at (704) 334-1600 and you could earn a $1,000 reward.
