MATTHEWS, NC (WBTV) - Thousands of customers in Mecklenburg County are back with power after a major outage Friday afternoon that continued into the evening.
Around 6:30 p.m. Duke Energy reported around 8,000 customers without power in Mecklenburg County. The outage happened on what has tied for the hottest day in Charlotte history, at 104 degrees.
Duke Energy told WBTV that a tree fell onto some power line along Lawyers Road, causing the outages in the Mint Hill and Matthews area. The power outages in the northern part of the county were caused by an "equipment issue", but officials would not elaborate.
As of 9 p.m. Saturday 779 customers in the county were without power. A spokeswoman with Duke said there is no estimated time of full restoration.
