CABARRUS COUNTY, NC (WBTV) – After months of road construction, drivers finally get to see the fruits of work crews labor as the Poplar Tent Road bridge opens this weekend.
It's a 125-million dollar road project that's had drivers traveling through Cabarrus County dealing with lane closures, road shifts and construction delays.
While crews are far from completion, people who travel the I-85 corridor to have something to celebrate this weekend.
The much anticipated opening of the new Poplar Tent bridge will relieve congestion crossing over the freeway.
This is coming just in time for the busy July 4th holiday, where heavy travel is expected in part due to dropping fuel prices.
It was built right next to the old bridge, which will have to be torn down, forcing workers to temporarily close one lane of I-85.
When finished, the section of I-85 around Bruton Smith Boulevard and Poplar Tent Road will be transformed from the current four lanes, to a new high capacity eight lane freeway.
Drivers hail this as vast improvement over current road conditions, the only thing now is, they'll have to wait until the project is complete to enjoy it.
