CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - The last week of June 2012 is keeping MEDIC busy. MEDIC reports there have been four calls for heat related calls. One had to go to the hospital. Experts say it is rare temperatures could reach the three digits this soon.
The hot weather is a concern for York County officials. They have decided to open up two cooling centers for people who need relief.
"A lot of people don't have air conditioning in their homes," Salvation Army Keisa Shannon said. "And fans when it's extremely hot- fans really don't play a major role and also our homeless population - a lot of people are living in the woods."
Camp counselors are also keep an eye on campers during this hot weather.
"Most of these counselors," ROck Hill Rec. Center Supervisor Tracy Parham said. "They are trained to watch for heat exhaustion, heat stress and all that type of stuff."
Doctors say staying out in the heat is serious. It can be deadly. Health officials say if you feel faint, dizzy, develop a headache or begin to hyperventilate - get help.
It is advised to drink lots of water and try to limit your time outside in the heat.
Cooling Centers are located at the Salvation Army Office located at 119 S. Charlotte Avenue in Rock Hill. The hours will be Friday only from 9:00AM - 5:00PM.
The other cooling center in Rock Hill is located downtown at ROC Community Center - 119 East White Street. That center will open for the weekend during the hours of 10:00AM - 4:00PM.
