A Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Deputy is in custody in Terrebonne Parish after admitting to officials he was in a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old girl.
On Monday, the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office got a call about a 16-year-old runaway girl. Deputies found the girl, and through an investigation, they learned of a possible sexual relationship between her and 41-year-old Murphy Melancon, who is a deputy with Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office.
When deputies questioned Melancon, he admitted his involvement and was arrested and booked. The Sheriff's Office says Melancon and the teen had been in the sexual relationship since February.
He was booked at the Terrebonne Parish Criminal Justice Complex on one count of felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile and is being held in lieu of $25,000 bond. Melancon has no previous criminal history.
Melancon had been assigned to the Patrol Division. His employment with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office was terminated with his arrest. If convicted, Melancon faces up to 10 years in prison, $5,000 in fines, or both.
