KANNAPOLIS, NC (WBTV) -
The third suspect in the shooting of a Kannapolis teen has been arrested after he was spotted getting off of a bus in Maryland, police say.
Darius Jamal Smotherson, 19, was wanted for his alleged involvement in the death of 17-year-old Daniel Cooper, who was shot in the neck while driving on Snow Street on May 21.
According to the Kannapolis Police Department, a call to Crime Stoppers led them to believe that Smotherson may be heading to the Baltimore area on a bus that left from Georgia.
They contacted the Maryland State Police on Monday, and fugitive investigators immediately began surveillance at several locations in and around the area where the bus might possibly stop, according to police.
At about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, Smotherson was spotted getting off a bus at a welcome center on I-95 near Route 32 in Laurel, Maryland.
Smotherson was arrested without incident.
This is the third person arrested in the case since the shooting happened.
Damarick Harper, 17, and Reginald Clark have also been arrested for their alleged involvement in Cooper's murder.
Smotherson is currently being held at the Maryland State Police Waterloo Barrack on a fugitive warrant.
Police tell WBTV that detectives from the Kannapolis Police Department are on their way to the barrack at this time to further their investigation and to initiate extradition proceedings.
