Man gets two life sentences for killing mother, son

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

50-year-old Scott Davis said very little in court as his guilty plea was put on the record.

However, he did offer a few words to one of his surviving victims as he was escorted out of the courtroom in chains.

"I love you and I loved your mama," he whispered to Gabriella Kinard. She was 15-years-old when Davis shot and killed her mother and older brother at their Hidden Valley home.

Davis has been in jail since the 2008 murders. Prosecutor Anna Greene said Davis opened fire on his long-term girlfriend and her family after a discussion at the kitchen table.

Gabrielle Kinard had wanted Davis to move out.

She was concerned about money, his unemployment and worried the Department of Social Services might try to take their five-month-old daughter away.

Greene told the court that Davis had agreed to go, but grabbed a gun instead.

"I can't understand how someone could destroy someone's life like that," said Gabriella. She told the court it's been hard living without her mother and brother, but she tries to stay positive every day.

Defense attorney Terry Sherrill said Davis has been remorseful since his arrest. He confessed to the crime and was headed toward a death penalty trial before the plea agreement came into play.

Greene said the plea guarantees Davis will serve two life sentences and was the best choice for Kinard's family. A trial could have lasted weeks and been subject to years of appeals, if Davis was convicted by a jury.
