CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -
The Rotary Club of Charlotte, also known as the Uptown Club, is about to install a female president. She will be the third in the club's 97-year-history.
Marilynn Bowler will be handed the gavel by Assistant City Manager Ron Kimble at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, officially becoming the club's new president for the 2012-2013 rotary year.
In the club's history there have only been two other female presidents. Ruth Shaw was the first, and served from 1993 to 1994. The second was Catherine Browning, who served from 2004 to 2005.
The Uptown Club was founded in 1916, and currently has a membership roster of about 318 people, comprised mostly of business men and women, politicians, media executives and other area VIP's.
The club meets every Tuesday of the year at the Crowne Plaza Hotel from 12:30 to 1:30 for lunch, networking and programs. The Club has the reputation of attracting outstanding speakers and typical member attendance is 200-250 members per meeting.
