PSI Monday: Heat builds for local widow

GASTONIA, NC (WBTV) - 78-year-old Ruth Waters was uncomfortable.

"I've never done anything like this," said Waters.

She wasn't uncomfortable just because we had a TV camera in her living room.

"My husband noticed that the house wasn't getting cool," said Waters.

It was last fall when the air conditioning suddenly quit working. Home inspector Paul King took a closer look. He quickly saw what had happened.

"All the Freon refrigerant leaked out of the piping," said King as he inspected the Waters' attic.

The leak was caused by a mistake. The Waters didn't make the mistake, but getting the person responsible to own up to it was proving difficult.

"He said it wasn't his problem," said Waters.

Ruth Waters' life really turned upside down a few weeks later. Her husband, Pug, of 57 years passed away.

"December the 4th," said Waters. "We've been in a mess here."

She'd given up the fight to get the air fixed, but then her daughter emailed us. Don't miss a WBTV "Problem Solver Investigation," Monday night at 11:00.
