CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

A 19-year-old Charlotte man has been arrested in Columbia, accused of fatally shooting a man in an east Charlotte apartment complex over the weekend.

The Richland County Sheriff's Department, in South Carolina, announced on Monday they had arrested 19-year-old Arnold Jerard Thomas.  Thomas was discovered hiding in an attic inside a home on Partridge Drive around 5:30 a.m.

Charlotte police say Thomas shot and killed 21-year-old Dantonio Gerrick Hamilton at the Hampton Commons Apartments off Milton Road early Saturday morning.

Hamilton was found lying in the parking lot around 3:30 a.m.; he was declared dead a few minutes later.

Witnesses said he took off running toward Barrington Drive right after the shooting. Police dogs tried to track him but lost him.

Thomas is expected to be transported back to Charlotte-Mecklenburg County to face charges after his arrest Monday morning.

Police say Arnold Jerard Thomas and Dantonio Gerrick Hamilton were known acquaintances, and that this incident was not a random act of violence.

Hamilton had recently pled guilty to his role in the deadly 2010 shooting of Devon Clement. He was given a suspended sentence and put on probation.

Detectives are questioning witnesses and are still investigating. If you have any information that could help police, call crimestoppers at 704-334-1600.
