SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Webb Simpson closed with a 2-under 68 to win a fog-shrouded final round at the Olympic Club to win the 112th U.S. Open for his first major title.
Simpson, whose previous best finish in a major was a tie for 14th at last year's U.S. Open, won the war of attrition on the final round and finished one over for the tournament. He rallied from four shots down on the final round.
Third-round co-leader Graeme McDowell and Michael Thompson tied for second, one shot back of Simpson. Jim Furyk was in the hunt until a bogey on the final hole and finished two back of Simpson.
Halfway co-leader Tiger Woods had a long weekend. Woods bogeyed his first three holes and five of his first six during a round of 3-over 73. He finished seven over for the tournament, going 75-73 on the weekend. He tied for 21st.
