Fire Dept: String of fires intentionally set

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Officials are investigating three structure fires on Nations Ford Road in southwest Charlotte that are believed to be the work of an arsonist.

The calls for help came in around 4:21 a.m. Wednesday

When emergency crews arrived on scene, they reported heavy fire and smoke conditions, and additional units rushed to the site of the fire.

Close to 50 firefighters worked to battle the blaze, which took a half an hour to knock down.

One firefighter sustained minor injuries in the incident, the department said.

Damage to the homes is estimated at $200,000.

The fire destroyed two houses and a shed belonging to a family who lives across the street from where the homes are located.

"This is some of our family property, it's been in my family for a long time, I mean forever," said Floyd Smith, the property owner.

This is not the first arson case in West Charlotte this year.

In January,  fire officials investigated five fires in the same area.

Four of the fires were in dumpsters.

A fifth fire caused about $30,000  in damage to a tire company.

Officials are investigating whether the fires are related.
