Study: Charlotte is less manly than years past, still in Top 10

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Charlotte may be called the "Queen City" but it may need a new title after cracking the top ten for America's Manliest City for the fourth year in a row.

According to a new study by the makers of COMBOS, Charlotte is the tenth manliest city in the United States.

The study compiles manly metrics of each city like the number of home improvement stores, steak houses, manly occupations and motorcycles per capita.  Past rankings were also based on criteria such as number of professional sports teams, popularity of power tools, and frequency of monster truck rallies.

"But even if a city has a fair share of manly traits, unmanly or 'girly' factors, like a high concentration of nail salons and fancy shopping boutiques can bump cities to the bottom of the list," the release from Combos said.

The 2012 ranking of the 10th spot is Charlotte's lowest ranking in the past four years. Charlotte took the crown, and the title of the Manliest, in 2010 - with second place finishes in 2009 and 2011.

In the past, NASCAR's hold in Charlotte, helped in the rankings.

This year's top city was Oklahoma City.

Columbia, South Carolina - the only other city from the Carolinas in the top 50 - jumped three spots to take the second place ranking this year.
