Deputies: Teen tries to kill snake, shoots self instead

KERSHAW, SC (WBTV) - A teenage boy says he was attempting to kill a snake at his Kershaw home when he accidentally shot himself, according to deputies.

According to a Lancaster County Sheriff's report, deputies were called to Springs Memorial Hospital on Wednesday night to the report of a shooting victim.

When deputies arrived, they spoke to 17-year-old Michael Anthony, of Kershaw, who was suffering from a gunshot wound to his right hand.

Anthony told deputies that he was attempting to kill a snake at his Arbor Drive home, using his mother's Glock 22 handgun. He reportedly had the gun in his left hand and was holding his dog using his right hand.

When he fired the dog pulled away from Anthony, the report states, causing his hand to end up in front of the gun's barrel. The bullet hit the palm of the teen's hand.

Deputies asked to see his mother's gun and ran the serial number.  They say the gun was cleared.

No word if any charges will be filed in the case.
