CONCORD, NC (WBTV) - When Margaret Hagerty gave up smoking at 64, her doctor told her to get moving. She took the advice and hasn't stopped moving since. In fact, she's run exactly 2,096 miles of competition marathon races since quitting smoking.
"I've done 80, but I'd like to do just one more," said Hagerty.
She now sticks to half-marathons since an injury 4 years ago curtailed her training for 8 months. When she was 81, she achieved a Guinness World Record for being the oldest person to run a marathon in all 7 continents in one year.
"I wouldn't call it running, I call it the nursing home shuffle," said Hagerty of her slow-paced, short-stepped style. But, it's still running and at 89 years old, she still does it.
