BELMONT, NC (WBTV) – Fire crews raced to the scene of a reported trailer fire, only so see the glow of a second mobile home fire just over the hill.
Neighbors in a small trailer park on Andrew Circle poured out of their homes around 3am Friday, when the sounds of sirens filled the morning air.
Flames were ripping through a trailer very close to their homes.
Volunteer firefighters raced to the mobile home park, and started pulling hose lines off of their trucks.
That's when somebody noticed the second fire.
A fire engine was sent over the hill, and encountered a second mobile home some fifty yards away. The house was in the process of being ravaged by flames.
Officials report both homes were vacant at the time of the fire. That tends to be good news for crews, because there's no one inside to rescue, and risk the lives of emergency personnel.
Two fires at the same time, and a few yards apart? Crews on the scene are calling this very suspicious.
Investigators spent the morning combing through the debris trying to find the source of the flames.
Neighbors however, are pointing their fingers directly at what they are calling a local gang.
People who live in the park said a group of about twenty teenagers has been terrorizing the area and wonder if they might be responsible for the fires.
Neighbors claim the group of kids assaults people and children in their yards, breaks into homes, and forces residents to stay huddled inside.
There is no word from police if this is the case or not. No arrests have been reported.
