History Museum suspends operation temporarily

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - The Charlotte Museum of History will suspend all operations on Friday because of a lack of funding.

The suspension will affect visits, tours and planned events for the upcoming Democratic National Convention.

Kathy Ridge is the interim director at the Charlotte Museum of History.

"This is a money issue, we need money to help our cash flow right now," said Ridge.

It cost about a million dollars a year to keep the museum running, but for the past three years the museum has been losing money.

Ridge says the museum will use the next few months to reevaluate its services.

She says many people are unaware that the museum exists.

"[We are going to] focus on what can we do to reinvent the museum so that we become an exciting destination that could be supported, " said Ridge.

She says the museum isn't the only one struggling financially, other museums around the country are cutting costs. Ridge believes the interest in museums seems to be fading, but she believes new ideas could draw tourists back to the attraction.

"Maybe this becomes a park ,an art center and a library and a museum , I don't know what it is, but we're wide open to ideas," said Ridge. @
