Students evacuated after apartment fire overnight

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – Students evacuated after fire starts in a laundry room at a local apartment complex early Thursday morning.

The alert went off just before 5am at an apartment complex located on University Terrace Drive.  Charlotte-Mecklenburg police rolled out to assist firefighters with the evacuation of several of the units.

The apartments are located very close to the UNC-Charlotte campus, and it's believed many of the people seen out in the parking lot in their pajamas near the fire trucks were students.

The fire department said it took 27 members of their department a little over 15 minutes to get the situation under control.

There were no reported injuries.

Our crews covering the incident say there is no sign of damage to the structure as of this point.

We are continuing to gather information, and will pass it along as it becomes available.
