CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - The first Atlantic storm of the 2012 hurricane season has formed off the South Carolina coast, nearly two weeks before the official start of the season.
Hurricane season officially begins in the Atlantic basin June 1, but we occasionally see earlier formation. In this case an area of low pressure just off the coast began to take on tropical characteristics and eventually strengthened into Tropical Storm Alberto Saturday evening. Sustained winds of 50 mph were reported.
Alberto is forecast to move slowly Southwest before curving back to the Northeast early next week.
Tropical Storm Watches are in effect for the South Carolina coastline from the Savannah River to the South Santee River.
Alberto is the earliest season storm to form since 2003's Ana.
For more on Alberto, you can visit the National Hurricane Center's website here.
