Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will have to pay a former teacher
$1.1 million, a federal judge ruled Friday.
Former CMS teacher Jeffrey Leardini sued the school system and won
earlier this year when a jury sided with him that school system officials
coerced him to resign.
Leardini was a teacher at Community House Middle School when he
was falsely accused of sexually assaulting his students.
The school system had appealed the jury's decision, saying the
judge incorrectly instructed them when making their deicision.
But U.S. District Judge Graham Mullen denied that appeal, saying
that the case was done properly and the jury's decision was a fair assessment
of the impact the legal process had on Leardini.
Leardini will receive $1.1 million
from CMS and just over $50,000 from Kayn Cunningham, a CMS employee who
the jury ruled misled Leardini into resigning to avoid further investigation.
