CMPD concerned about a strong-armed robbery

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - The Charlotte-Mecklenburg police department is concerned about a strong-armed robbery at a jewelry store near SouthPark.

This happened in the middle of the day when there were no other customers in the store.

Surveillance video shows a large man in a flop hat and orange vest entering A.Bonnart jewelers on Providence Road. He says he's there to spray for bugs, but walks into the back office and sprays owner Steven Makar in the face with pepper spray. The 78-year old Makar runs out the back and calls police.

The crook then tries to spray Makar's 54-year old son, Mario, but he deflects the chemical with his hands.

The scene then turns into a brutal beating, with Mario Makar absorbing blows to the head and body. He is then throw head first into the door and the beating continues as Makar lies motionless on the floor.

When the bad guy goes into the showroom to start stealing jewelry, Makar gets up and grabs a gun. He takes a quick shot at the robber, but misses.

The robber then takes the gun from Makar and beats him again. Makar was left with head lacerations and a broken nose.

Before it's over, the robber rakes expensive watches into his large duffel bag and leaves. CMPD Detective Marty Cuthbertson says he wasn't working alone.

"He ran right into an apartment complex nearby, there was an individual waiting, driving a gray four-door vehicle like the getaway car. There's two individuals involved, one white guy, one black guy."

Clearly this was well planned and well executed by one very strong and fearless criminal. If you can help get him off the streets, call Crimestoppers at (704) 334-1600 and you could earn a reward up to $1,000.
