CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – After this storm system moves out, the weather is looking fantastic! If you're looking for an excuse for some good old-fashioned outdoor exercise, then here it is: Friday May 18th is National Bike to Work Day.
About 730,000 commuters get to work on a bicycle nationwide. Carolyn Szczepanski with the League of American Bicyclists hopes that number will double on Friday.
"Biking to work has terrific health benefits," says Szczepanski. "You get to work, plus you get some exercise and a chance to enjoy the fresh air. You arrive ready to take on the day." It also means less gas you have to put in the tank and benefits the community as well by reducing traffic congestion and alleviating parking issues that can plague downtown areas.
According to the US Census Bureau's American Community Survey, only 0.2% of Charlotte residents ride a bike to work.
